SugarFest – Sunday, October 7th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Come have a sweet ole time at the West Baton Rouge Museum’s SugarFest on Sunday, October 7 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This will be the museum’s 23rd annual sweet celebration of the sugar cane harvest.

SugarFest provides visitors with a free opportunity to learn about local culture, music and history with a variety of folk art and occupational craft demonstrations, tours of the museum’s exhibits and historic buildings, cane cutting and grinding demonstrations, cane syrup boiling, and of course, live music. Genres featured include Blues, Dixieland Jazz, Folk, Cajun, Zydeco, Bluegrass, and Spirituals. Some of the demonstrations include praline candy making, open hearth cooking, blacksmithing, rope making, soap making, bousillage making, wood carving, wood working with antique hand tools, spinning and weaving, and more. Other festivities include wagon and train rides, a petting zoo, old fashioned cake walks, sugary treats, and a sweets contest with celebrity judges.

Help West Baton Rouge Museum celebrate 23 Sweet Years of SugarFest by entering an old fashioned Sweets Contest hosted by the West Baton Rouge Historical Association!

Entry forms are available at the West Baton Rouge Museum located at 845 N. Jefferson Avenue in Port Allen and online at Please carefully review contest rules, and then get cooking, SUGAR! Make your best recipe in any of these sugar-filled categories– cookies, cakes, pies or candies. Your entries must arrive at the West Baton Rouge Museum between 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on Sunday morning. Entries must not require reheating or refrigeration. Stick around while local celebrity judges sample all the entries and enjoy the sweet rewards the West Baton Rouge Museum has in store for you.

Enjoy historic craft demonstrations, cane grinding, syrup boiling, live music and much more! While you’re there, listen for the names of the contest winners to be announced. You might win the grand prize!
We encourage anyone wishing to show their support, but not feeling that competitive spirit, to consider donating cookies, cakes, pies and candies to help stock the Sweets Booth at SugarFest.

They are $8.00 and includes 1/2 roasted chicken, rice dressing and a roll.
