Off the Hook: A Journey Beneath the Waves

Off The Hook Newsflash

On November 11, 2023 the West Baton Rouge Museum will open the exhibition entitled Off the Hook: A Journey Beneath the Waves by Katherine Klimitas. This exhibition is Katherine Klimitas’ latest collection of vibrant watercolor paintings. Dive into a sea of tropical fish, swim with dolphins and flee from sharks as you visit her seascapes and coral reefs made up of intricate brush strokes and vivid colors. Flecks of gold, silver, and copper bring life to each watercolor creation.

Opening Reception

There’s something fishy going on at the West Baton Rouge Museum. We are casting a line to capture an audience to help us welcome artist, Katherine Klimitas! Join us as we celebrate this latest exhibition of work. On Sunday, November 19th, 2023 from 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM, meet the artist, view this vibrant collection of watercolor paintings depicting scenes under the sea, and enjoy refreshments and related art and ecological activities. There will also be live Cajun music presented by the Cajun French Music Association’s Le Jam starting at 3:00 PM where visitors are welcome to sing, dance, or join in with their own acoustic instruments. Stay awhile to take in the surroundings of colorful fish and seascapes adorning the museum walls.

Katherine Klimitas is a New Orleans-based artist and designer who sold her first watercolor at age 10. As the daughter of veterinarians, Katherine expresses her family’s life-long love of animals through her meticulous life-like paintings. She earned a B.A. from Loyola University in 2011, and today at age 34, runs her multifaceted business KAK ART & Designs from home. When clients learn that Katherine has Osteogenesis Imperfecta, also known as brittle bone disease, they are captivated by her unique perspective. She and her parents stopped counting her broken bones at 500 at age 10. She’s 2 feet 7 inches tall, gets around in an electric wheelchair, and creates all of her art, jewelry and commercial graphic design while lying on her side.

Visitors who enjoyed her 2021 exhibit at the museum, Louisiana Birds, will also enjoy this underwater experience. This exhibit is open from November 11th through December 30th.
